Priorat Wine

The Priorat DO (in Castilian, Priory) is a qualified denomination of origin (the second one to be obtained, after the Rioja DO). The denomination of origin is in the province of Taragon, in the region of El Priorat. The dry Mediterranean climate benefits wines, but it is the soil, poor and volcanic, formed by layers of black slate that provides wine with minerals. The vineyards are situated on hills with rather steep slopes.

The Priorat spans 1,725 hectares, with over 82 wineries and 680 growers. Its main white grape varieties are Macabeo, Pedro Ximénez and Garnacha Blanca. Its famous red wines, produced mainly from Carignan, also use the Grenache, Garnacha Peluda, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, as other varieties. They are garnet-red in color, aromatic, rich and fleshy.

Wines from the D.O. have become a global benchmark, and are admired by many sommeliers and wine experts.
